The year 1996 is calling, and has invited you to revisit the classic game Quake. Why you ask? Well, there’s a new level editor called TrenchBroom out, and it beckons you to build more fiendish levels to blast your way through. Read on to see what this level editor brings to the now 17 year old classic.
Described as a modern cross-platform level editor (that’s Windows, OSX, and eventually Linux), Trenchbroom allows true 3D level editing. That’s right, there’s no 2D maps to be had here. As creator Kristian Duske writes, “I believe that the traditional approach, where you work primarily in 2D views, forces you to think in 2D rather than in 3D. That is why this editor does not have 2D views at all – you do all work in one single 3D view.”
You can drag, rotate, and mould those polygons to your hearts content. What’s more, it’s completely open source and comes with built in documentation, for those of you new to level editing.
